Don Hallett, in Petroleum Geology of Libya, MIOCENE. Miocene outcrops cover ,km 2 of northern Libya, amounting to more than 10% of the total area of the country. The principal outcrops are a coastal belt extending from Al Khums to Ra' s Lanuf, the Sirt Basin embayment from the coast to beyond the Sarir oilfield, and the entire Cyrenaican Platform, north of the Amal oilfield. The Miocene or "less recent" is so called because it contains fewer modern animals than the following, Pliocene, epoch. The Miocene lasted from 18 million years, making it the longest epoch of the Cenozoic era. This was a huge time of transition, the end of the old prehistoric world and the birth of the more recent sort of world.
